Thefts from Insecure Motor Vehicles

Police Scotland is reminding motorists across the North East to take a few simple steps to protect their vehicles and personal belongings following reports of opportunistic thefts from cars and vans.

With many thefts occurring simply because vehicles have been left unlocked, officers are urging drivers to adopt a reliable routine every time they leave their car, regardless of how long they plan to be away.

The majority of thefts from vehicles are preventable. Criminals often walk down residential streets testing door handles, looking for an easy target. By taking just a few seconds to ensure your car is locked and your valuables are removed, you can significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour around parked vehicles immediately.

If you witness a crime in progress, always dial 999. For non-emergencies, contact Police Scotland on 101, or report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
